My classroom is running low on Kleenex boxes. If you are able please send in a few boxes. Thank you
Before spring break I assessed the class and their performance in mathematics to make sure they were on track for the prep school next year. Their fraction scores were very impressive as well as their algebra readiness scores. However, it seemed as though after three quarters of fractions they have forgotten some of the basics involved in operations of decimals. For the next three week i will be changing from Reasoning mind to a curriculum i am writing myself just to refresh many of the topics they covered in prior grades but haven been exposed to for a while. This unit will last until approximately April 20 at which point we will switch back to Reasoning Mind to finish out the fourth quarter. They will continue to have homework every evening and periodic quizzes.
It is the last week of the quarter and what a quarter it was. This week there is a quiz in mathematics on Tuesday over finding unknown fractions of values. So you can plan accordingly, the week we return there will be a quiz on Tuesday 20th and exam 7 will be on the following Tuesday 27th.
Wednesday is the chapter 5 biology quiz. Please practice vocabulary with flashcards and study the text and notes. Have a wonderful break and enjoy the time off. There will be an exam on Wednesday over the 6th unit in mathematics. The 6th unit encompasses lessons 78-86 and a study guide was sent home on Friday to be finished over the weekend. I will also be sending home another study guide on Monday to help with any of the concepts they are struggling with.
Mathematics - This week will be all about dividing fractions. On Friday of last week we learned how to divide fractions using number lines and how the algorithm was originally created. This week we will practice dividing fractions by multiplying the dividend by the reciprocal of the divisor. Thursday we will review solving equations and learn how to solve equations with fractions with a quiz on Friday. The unit 6 exam will be on Tuesday or Wednesday of next week.
Science - The chapter 4 quiz is on Wednesday and begin chapter 5 on Thursday. We will be beginning fractions this week and spend the remainder of the year studying the four operations of fractions and proportions. This week will begin with the properties of fractions with a quiz on Tuesday over equivalent fractions. By the end of the week we will begin reducing fractions to the simplest form and have a quiz on the 14th.
We began a new chapter on Friday over mixtures. This week we will be discussing what can mix and two types of mixtures that can be formed. This chapter is different from most chapters because I am combining chapter 6 and 7 into one chapter about mixtures and separation. The chapter 6-7 quiz will be on the 15th. Mathematics: There is an exam on Thursday over the second unit lessons 20-37. It would be a good idea to spend time this week revising or re-doing questions from their homework book to prepare for their exam. I have already sent home a study guide with extra practice questions for them to look up in their homework books and check for accuracy.
Science: This week we finish Chapter 5 Acid-Base Neutralization. It is quite a short chapter so they should have time to re-read the chapter and prepare for vocabulary. Please have your scholar review the homework and make appropriate corrections to prepare for the quiz. This week in science, we will conclude chapter 3 with a quiz on Wednesday and begin chapter 4 on Thursday. Chapter 4 begins our adventure into solving chemical solutions. This week we will learn the history of acids and bases and study Svante Arrhenius who many of the acids and bases are named after. Next week we will begin balancing formulas.
In Mathematics, we will be learning divisibility tests and create some of our own rules for finding divisibility. In our discovery of divisibility tests we will continue our study of factors and multiples by finding the greatest and least common between a set of two numbers. Tomorrow is the first exam of the year! Students were given a study guide on Friday to prepare for the exam. We will review the study guide today in class if they had any questions from over the weekend. This evening they need to make any corrections in their homework book or on their review for the final evening of studying.
Chemistry should be interesting as we progress into combining molecules. It feels like a long journey building up to solutions and there are more exciting things to come. They have learned salts, nitrates, acids, and last week was hydroxide. This week's anion will be phosphates PO4! Mathematics will consist of beginning percentages and finding a percentage of a number. If your scholar is having a hard time with finding a percentage of a number please have them refer to the two examples in their in their homework book on page 38. It is a difficult concept but we will be taking three days on this topic and conclude with a quiz on Thursday.
In science, we will be finishing chapter 2 on Wednesday with a quiz. Hopefully, they have already begun studying by making flashcards or re-reading the chapter and their notes. Another way they can prepare is by re-drawing some of the molecule examples in their notes. I am excited about the coming chapter where we will be beginning reactions! |
