There will be a quiz on Thursday of this week in mathematics over dividing decimals. Please take some time to have your scholar study by making corrections in their homework book and reviewing or redoing prior questions to practice for the quiz. If they are having a difficult time with their homework; send me a message to schedule a tutoring time in the mornings.
In science, the class will be continuing their study of molecules and how they bond together. By the end of the week students should be able to identify whether a two element molecule is ionic or covenant and if it is classified as a acid or salt (bases will be identified in future chapters). This week will also start the process of identifying nitrates, phosphates, carbonates, sulfates, silicates, and borates. There will be a quiz over chapter 2 on 09.13. 17. Math will be focused on multiplication and division of decimals and begin to delve into basic addition and subtraction of fractions. An additional note for parents, problem sets are not assigned homework they are for extra practice at home and do not need to be turned in to school.
There is a lot going on this week! It will be the first time the fifth grade will be going to the lab! It will be a simple observation to learn the procedures of the lab, but will also be a time to see the properties of the groups of the periodic table in real life. If you came to curriculum night then you have already seen the observation we will be working on today! Important upcoming dates: There will be two quizzes this week in math on Tuesday and Friday. Chapter 1 science quiz will be on Wednesday. Deficiencies will be sent out on Wednesday. This weekend is an R&R weekend, so enjoy the weekend off homework! As the third week begins mathematics is off to a great start as the class has become comfortable in the math lab and will be taking their first quiz on Thursday. The quiz will encompass all the skills they have learned so far this quarter in algorithms of addition and subtraction using decimals. Please make sure your scholar has made corrections in their homework book and turned in all their homework (you can check this by making sure I have graded all previous assignments).
The fifth grade performed quite well on their first quiz over the firth twenty elements. This week we will go back in time and study the history of the elements as well as the first elements or at least what the different cultures of the world thought the first elements were. It was a wonderful first week as I had the opportunity to get to know a little bit about each of the new fifth graders. I am looking forward to the second week as we progress beyond the initial shock of fifth grade and begin the challenge of getting into the math lab and taking the first science quiz over the first twenty elements.
This week in mathematics we will be studying Natural Numbers and properties of the four operations. They will also be introduced to inequalities and the different parts of mathematical expressions. In Science, the week will begin with rounding the atomic weight of elements to find the number of electrons, then reading about some of the chemists who shaped the first table of elements. It has been a relaxing summer but I hope you are as excited as I am to get back to school! This year will consist of Chemistry in the first semester and Biology in the second semester. We will begin the Chemistry portion of fifth grade science by memorizing the first twenty elements of the Periodic Table of Elements. The first quiz will be on the 16th. It is very important they know the first twenty elements as they will be used in most of the solutions and a strong foundation is important for true understanding.
This week in Math we will spend time reviewing prior knowledge from fourth grade to warm our brains up for the rigor of fifth grade mathematics. This Friday will will get into the Math Lab and begin the journey of decimals to fractions. I am happy to be back and hope you are all ready for a challenging and exciting year! |
